About The Substrate
Plant science for small-apartment growers.
I’m a curious grower figuring out how to keep houseplants alive and a balcony productive in a small Nordic apartment. This site is where I write down what works and why, one pillar at a time.
Each pillar is an evergreen reference. It answers why something works before it tells you what to do. A short-form video may have brought you here; the pillar is why the video exists. No face, no mystery, just the substrate: the layer where things grow from.
What you’ll find here
Five pillars, each covering both houseplants and edible crops.
- Substrate. Soil mixes, drainage, aeration, DIY recipes with coir, bark, perlite, and pumice. See: Monstera soil mix.
- Water & Humidity. Watering frequency, drainage behavior, root rot mechanics, humidity zones. See: Monstera watering.
- Light. Quality, intensity, duration, window aspect at Nordic latitudes, winter grow lights.
- Nutrition. N-P-K basics, micronutrients, fertilizer timing, reading deficiency symptoms.
- Environment. Temperature, airflow, overwintering, dormancy, small-space microclimates.
Troubleshooting lives inside each pillar, under when X goes wrong. The fix rarely makes sense without the mechanism.
